Remember the saying old is gold? A few incidents this week made me feel this way. On my way to work (everything happens while commuting), my cab driver decides to tune into Akashvani. I was a little bugged at the prospect of listening to the news early morning, I mean that's what I do all day!! But gradually, I began to enjoy the bulletin. It was informative and contained a certain depth, something missing in today's FM channels where sometimes you feel there is too much chatter. The bulletin ended and on came some very nice old songs - some of which I've never heard in my life! The melodious voice of Md Rafi singing 'Mohabbat kar lo, jee bhar lo, aji kisne roka hai' was such a pleasure. It put a smile to my face. Things were so simple when we were growing up - now there is so much choice that we end up confused!
Also this week, my nani narrated an interesting incident. They had gone to Habibs to inspire my cousin for a haircut (he's been growing his hair for a year) Forget about my cousin, Mr Habib got fixated by nani and told her 'Can I cut your hair, please, it's so lovely?' Taken aback, she said 'there's hardly anything to cut'. But he persisted, 'please madam, I will really love it if I give you a haircut'. Poor Nani, what could she do, so she agreed, the only condition being she should be able to tie it up. Well.... the haircut looks nice, the grey silky curls are more pronounced and yes, there is a hint of a ponytail too, even though it's only an inch! :)
Rakhi was fun, I got a real nice gift, a music player!! But going to work the next day was even better -- because my vehicle was guess what - a white Bharat Sarkar ki Ambassador. Now there have been very few occasions when I have sat in an ambassador, forget about a government vehicle.. Oh yes it was in Chandigarh, when I was accompanying Mom on an official trip. But sitting in an ambassador in Delhi is a matter of pride! It's quite a decent vehicle, has an old-world charm to it, so I wonder why the PM's fleet has been changed to Mercedes. They seem more apt for the FBI :) Anyway, I quite enjoyed my ride to work. And the best part was -- the potholes didn't seem so bad anymore!! Sometimes old really is gold!

I'm sure Akashwani and Ambassador will really appreciate the endorsement :)
ReplyDeleteAnd so will the few of us that treasure these charming remnants of times passed.
From Akashwani to grey ponytail to white bharat sarkar ki ambassador…. Quite an interesting summary of the week.
ReplyDeleteI guess we get them so rarely that we love them when we get them…
In these NEW times of NEW generation… everything is over done and when by chance we get an opportunity to taste a bit of old memories…
with a heavy sigh, pheeeewww……..we write on the wall “Old is Gold”.
:) Its good to take out some time....and ponder over the gems of the past...which will be evergreen.....and soon be considered as antiques...
