Thank god for music!

Hello again! Couldn't stay off for too long. :) Since I promised I would write about my likes and dislikes, let's start with the likes, shall we? Music is an integral part of my life. I cannot imagine a single day without a song. Sometimes I think it beats my love for reading -- well, that's possible maybe because I can't read in a moving car. (I am sensitive remember?) Anyway, coming back to music, there's always a song playing in my head. Since I spend a lot of time in commuting, music keeps me going. Sometimes it transports me to another world.

I remember school time when QSQT released and Papa Kehte Hain was the rage. In the days of DD, the song featured on Rangoli/Chitrahaar for two consecutive years on my birthday -- I was naturally elated. You may think it's kiddish but those were not the times of requesting for one's favourite songs over the radio or TV or of downloading music. So to see one's favourite song on one's birthday was an absolute delight! I cried seeing Aamir Khan die in the film, so it had special significance. Stop smiling guys, I was eight!

I have to admit a peculiar habit with respect to songs --I simply have to recognise the song within the first 15 seconds or so -- or I feel I've let myself down. The introductory tune has to do it for me -- nahin toh kya fayda! Another thing, I like noticing the instruments used in the song, particuarly the piano and guitar. Mom enjoys music but often doesn't recognise singers and asks me. I make a face and say, it's Alka Yagnik -- you should know-- and she will retort -- well her voice sounds different in every song and I will argue back -- but you're supposed to know anyway!! :) Sunidhi can sound very different, you'll never know it's the same person singing Beedi Jalaile and Meri Zindagi Mein Aaye Ho.

Some favourites in today's times are Sonu Nigam (no one can sing romantic songs better), Sukhwinder (something spiritual about him), Shaan (melodious), Udit (most original voice) and KK (flawless, his voice feels so good). I also think Sunidhi and Shreya are absolutely marvellous. I sometimes wonder how the music director decides on the singer -- once you hear a good song, you just can't think of it being sung by anyone else! I'm beginning to like Kailash Kher a lot -- especially because of the lyrics in his songs -- he uses very nice Hindi -- a refreshing change from the Hinglish we sometimes are subjected to. I mean what kind of a song is Oh sexy mama, won't u do the sa re ga ma?? Really now!!!

I would love to but can't tell you my favourite song, honestly - because like I said, there are always too many and there's always a memory associated with one and maybe, that's why the choices change. But one song I've loved through the years is Main Koi Aisa Geet Gaoon from Yes Boss.. Isn't that cute? :) As much as the song is beautiful, the video is memorable too with SRK's antics, Juhi's expressions and the cute Tweety! It's what innonence is all about. Another one I really like is Kya mujhe pyar hai (both original and remix) -- more so for the lyrics, but nowadays it reminds me of Shiney Ahuja and I feel disgusted! Topic change.. Genda Phool is much better - simple and catchy. Or Swades - lyrical and sensitive. I told you -- won't be able to choose one! Happy listening!
