Swades is one of my favourite films. This is not so just for SRK -- though it is one of his best performances. He was not a star in the film, but actually got into the skin of his character. I like Swades for its positive message. I love the line where SRK says "main nahin manta hamara desh duniya ka sabse mahaan desh hai, par hamara desh duniya ka sabse mahaan desh ban sakta hai". Some people feel the film is drab, like a documentary -- bhashan dena sabko aata hai, it's no big deal, how many people return to their country.... I beg to differ. I don't grudge anyone who wants to live abroad. It's their life, their decision, they work hard, be it in any country and want a good life. We all want it. But don't nullify the work done by people who have actually left greener pastures to make a difference in their home country. It's not easy to give up a comfortable life in the US and take up farming in India. So it hurts when I hear comments like Swades is hardly real.
Swades was based on a true story. And there are many such examples. Most of us just think and feel sad or angry about what is wrong with our country. So be kind enough and admire those who have the courage to defy the odds. Even among the many corrupt people we have in this country, there are a few good men and women who make things work. Let's be proud of that!

Believe it or not, I caught the one line of dialogue you quoted in the post during the 5 minutes that I watched the film!
ReplyDeleteCan't say I liked the film much but it would be hard to disagree with the sentiment of you've expressed.
Watch it entirely and then maybe u will think differently.
ReplyDeleteHi Upasana,
ReplyDeleteYour orkut profile, lead me to your blog. I am a fan of SRK too. However, Swades is not an entertaining movie. People go to the movies mainly for a good story. There is no story in Swades. Too predictable.
