The experience of Harry Potter

The Harry Potter books became an integral part of my life - I got so used to them that I wondered what would happen after the final book! And the void did come, I didn't know what to do for some time -- so I began to read them again and relive the experience :) But like they say, life goes on and now we have the movies to enjoy.

Almost everyone will agree that films based on books often pale in comparison. This has happened with Potter too. Leaving the theatre after watching the latest offering -- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince -- I feel a tad disappointed. Since there is no mystery to the story anymore, I can safely say I felt left down by some scenes, especially Dumbledore's death and the end. Some crucial scenes and more so, key dialogues are missing from the film which cut down on its emotion. I remember how sad I was at Dumbledore's death after reading the book, it was something unimaginable and I felt Harry's loss. The book stayed with me a long time - it still is my favourite in the series, since almost every one knew or at least hoped Harry would survive in the final book. I guess it's something to d0 with books and our imagination. HP6 is visually fascinating, the collapse of the London Millennium Bridge is magnificently shot but the movie lacks emotion towards the end. At only one point in the film, I felt choked, tears came into my eyes -- but only for a second - it was as if the emotion was swiftly edited!

We love books because we get to create our own world through them. The HP books have been beautifully written. I will always remember them because they remind us of the important things in life - innocence, love, friendship, loyalty and the victory of good over evil. Thank you Ms Rowling for creating such a wonderful world!

  1. I agree. Am not sure if a movie can ever fully encapsulate a book. I watched 'The Kite Runner' on TV. Now looking forward to reading it. People tell me the book is much better.
