What are these games?

Another ride in the cab on the way to work… I was listening to music through my earphones. It’s my favourite way to pass time during the journey. How much can you look out of the window? Even though I do, that’s where most of the blog ideas come from. ;)

Anyway, I mustn’t digress from the point. As we waited at a traffic signal, the taxi driver suddenly asked me, “Madam yeh games kya hain”. (what are these games). It didn’t take me long to guess he was talking about the blessed Commonweath Games – arguably the only thing Delhi’ites talk about nowadays. It’s all over the papers and well, I won’t go into details. I tried to explain: “These are the games which will be held in Delhi next month in which players from different countries will participate.”

More questions: What will they play? Me: They will play different sports like hockey, cycling (In my mind, I was struggling to think of Hindi names for some of the sports like wrestling, but my brain didn’t help at the time). Cricket also, he asked? I said no, not that. And probably that was the end of his interest in the CWG!

He didn’t seem very convinced by my answers or probably couldn’t guage the scale of the event. Out of the blue, another question: “You will have leave during that time, isn’t it?” I said: "No, only schools and colleges are closed." I don’t think he was bothered to ask any more questions.

By this time, I had reached the office. Final thought in my head: I don’t think he knows about the reserved lanes and the two thousand rupees fine yet. Drivers in the city are not known for lane driving, even though this one is good. God help us during the CWG!!
